Statement regarding ESPN’s recent feature on Shooting Touch

Date: March 8, 2024

ESPN recently released a video and article featuring Shooting Touch’s work in Rwanda. The sports network aimed to shed light on the impactful sport-for-development work taking place in the country. While Shooting Touch expresses gratitude for the recognition of its programs and impact, the organization disagrees with the historical perspective and narrative presented in the media.

Shooting Touch was not involved in producing the video or article and had no control over the production or final product. Shooting Touch did not see the video or read the article until it aired publicly. However, Shooting Touch provided ESPN access to its programs, staff, and beneficiaries.

Shooting Touch unequivocally disassociates itself from the insensitive and inaccurately portrayed narrative featured in ESPN's coverage. The report refers to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda as a “civil war,” which is not only factually inaccurate, but also deeply offensive to the Rwandan people. To address this issue, Shooting Touch directly contacted ESPN, urging a correction and requesting the accurate acknowledgment of this tragic period in Rwandan history. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, ESPN denied the majority of the requested changes.

Shooting Touch believes that ESPN inadequately captures the true essence of Rwanda today, focusing on the immediate post-genocide realities of 30 years ago, rather than the transformation the country has undergone and continues to evolve into. Rwanda is a nation filled with hope, with engaged citizens and a government actively working towards progress and improved lives for its people. Despite substantial evidence showcasing Rwanda's advancements, the narrative of this feature undermines the humanity and resilience of the Rwandan people.

“ESPN’s misrepresentation is by no means reflective of Shooting Touch’s views or values,” states Lindsey Kittredge, Co-Founder of Shooting Touch. “We are deeply sorry for any pain this may have caused. We remain hopeful that viewers can focus on the powerful stories of equity and resilience portrayed and can take this opportunity to learn more about this incredible country and the conscious movement toward unity, hope, and growth that exists there today.”
